Doula FAQ's

When should I hire a doula?

We recommend interviewing and hiring a doula anytime after the first trimester or as soon as you know that you’d like to have one. (Early hiring allows for plenty of time to establish a relationship, phone and text support throughout pregnancy, and a clear understanding of your goals).

What if the hospital I am birthing at doesn’t allow doulas?

Hospital policies have been ever-changing throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, which does create uncertainly around whether or not your doula will be able to join you at the hospital. We will make every reasonable effort to join you, but your doula will also help you labor at home as long as possible and provide virtual support if they have been declined admittance to the hospital. We can also advise you on which hospitals are allowing doulas.

Do I still need to take a birth class if I hire a doula?

Yes! While doulas are knowledgeable in supporting birth, they do not replace childbirth education (CBE). When clients take a CBE course, their doula is able to spend more time connecting with them on a personal level and discussing how to support their individualized needs.

When will my doula join me for labor?

Your doula will join you when you request them to. Everyone experiences labor differently, so what you may need may differ from another person, or even from a previous birth experience. Communication with your doula is key!

How do I choose a doula?

When interviewing doulas, you may want to know about their training and approach to supporting birth, but also think about who makes you feel comfortable, relaxed, and supported. There is a doula for everyone, so don’t feel like you have to hire the first person you meet!

What’s the difference between a midwife and doula?

A licensed midwife is a professional who provides clinical care to women during pregnancy, birth postpartum, and sometimes provides general gynecological care.

A doula provides non-clinical care for pregnancy, birth, and postpartum in the form of physical support, emotional support, and information.
